We need His wisdom

Isaiah 55:8-9 NLT – “My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the LORD. “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine. [9] For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.

God ways and thoughts are above our thoughts. He sees everything in relation to His plans and from an eternal perspective. This is why we need to pray and ask His will and His direction. We need to pray and seek His wisdom. The good news is that God wants us to know His will and plans. Proverbs 3:6 says, “Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.”

Dear God, I seek Your will for my life today. Your Word says that Your ways and thoughts are above my ways and thoughts. Today I ask for Your wisdom and guidance. Let me know what You would have me do. Show me which path to take. I ask in Jesus’ name, Amen

A love for His Word

Psalm 119:36-40 NLT – Give me an eagerness for your laws rather than a love for money! [37] Turn my eyes from worthless things, and give me life through your word. [38] Reassure me of your promise, made to those who fear you. [39] Help me abandon my shameful ways; for your regulations are good. [40] I long to obey your commandments! Renew my life with your goodness.

For my devotions this morning I read the above passage. It reminded me of a conversation I had with a friend years ago. My friend loved God’s Word, the Bible. He would always talk about the passages he read and how it spoke to him in his devotions. He could quote passages and God’s Word was never far from his lips.

One day I asked how he had such a love for God’s Word? Where did it come from? His simple answer amazed me. He said, “I asked God for it!” He went on to say that in the Psalms David often told God how much he loved His Word. He then simply asked God for a love of the Word like David had.

He then asked me if I sincerely wanted it. When I said, “Yes”, he prayed for me. That prayer changed my life. Today I want to pray a prayer for you. I will write it out below. If you want a real and lasting love for God’s Word, you can pray it too and say amen at the end. I believe it will be life changing for you!

Prayer

Dear God, I pray that I will truly love and desire Your Word like David did. I pray that I will read it and meditate on it day and night. I pray my life will be built on Your Word and Your commandments. I ask that the Holy Spirit will speak to my heart every time I open my Bible. I ask in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Let us not forget

I have been reading through the Old Testament book of Exodus the last few weeks. One thing that struck me was how often the people seemed to forget about what God had done for them. They were not little things either. Things like taking them out of Egypt, parting the Red Sea, guiding by pillar of fire and cloud and speaking to them through Moses. But still they seemed to forget His great works.

As I reflected I found myself being reminded of the amazing things God has done for me. Times when He provided when I really needed it, times when he healed me of sickness, times when He clearly spoke to me. I soon realised I was not that different from the people of Israel wandering through the desert!

It really prompted me to not forget the great things God has done for me. I need to write them on my heart, speak of them to others and keep them in the front of my mind. I just can’t forget them.

How about you? What great things has God done for you that you sometimes forget? Let us purpose in our hearts to have a long memory when it comes to the things God does for us.

Prayer

Dear God, thank You for all the wonderful things You have done for me. Help me to always remember how faithful and generous You are to me. I prayer I will never forget. Amen.

The mind of Christ

I have been thinking a lot lately about how the Bible says we have the mind of Christ. It is something I have been praying about and starting to research. Here are some early reflections.

The Dictionary of Biblical Themes describes the mind of Christ as, “The centre of Jesus Christ’s thought, understanding and motivation, characterised by a total dedication to God. Christians are called upon to have the same mind as Christ.”

What a great simple definition. Having Christ’s thoughts, understanding, motivation and dedication to God. This is something we should all aim for as disciples of Christ.

In 1 Corinthians 2:15-16 NLT the Apostle Paul tells us why this is so important. He says, “Those who are spiritual can evaluate all things, but they themselves cannot be evaluated by others. [16] For, “Who can know the LORD’s thoughts? Who knows enough to teach him?” But we understand these things, for we have the mind of Christ.”

Paul tells us that having the mind of Christ is important for us as Christians so we can understand the things of God and evaluate all things.

In verse 14 Paul gives us context, “But people who aren’t spiritual can’t receive these truths from God’s Spirit. It all sounds foolish to them and they can’t understand it, for only those who are spiritual can understand what the Spirit means.”

So for us as Christians it is vitally important to have the mind of Christ. It enables us to both understand the things of God and helps us to be totally dedicated to God with our lives.

Prayer

Dear God, help us to understand what it is to have the mind of Christ. Help us to have the same attitude of Christ. Please renew our minds so we can understand the things of God and evaluate all things. I pray we can be totally dedicated to You and Your Kingdom. I ask in Jesus’ name, Amen.
