I was asked the other day what the best piece of pastoral advice I have received over the years. I really had to stop and think.
After some time in reflection I remembered what one of my Pastors said when I was new to ministry. He said, “We all have to dig our own wells”. By this he was saying that we all need to do the work of spiritual growth.
Our Pastors and leaders can teach us from the pulpit or in Bible studies, but ultimately it is up to each of us to spend time reading the Bible, praying and spending time alone with God.
Every strong Christian I have ever met over the years was committed to daily time alone with God in prayer and reflective Bible ready. They knew that the daily spiritual disciplines were the things that sustained and made them grow.
I did not realise at the time it was one of the best pieces of pastoral advice I would receive. I also did not realise how much it would impact me. I have passed it on to many people over the years.
So, if you want to grow in your faith, you have to dig your own wells. You have to put in the time and effort each day until Jesus calls you home.
