Life before the internet?

Do you remember life before the internet?

Todays WordPress question was “Do we remember life before the internet”. I am old enough to say yes, but I have to admit only vaguely.

The main thing that comes to mind is doing studies before the internet. You had to go to a library and use books lol! I can remember getting an assignment for Bible college and then rushing to the library to get the best books.

The other things about times before the internet is actually going to see people to ask questions, to pay bills or to stay in contact with them. These days we can do all this online and we can do it from our couch.

So do I prefer life now with the internet or then without it? I guess both have there positives or negatives, but I have to say I enjoy the connection to people and information the internet gives us today.

How about you? Do you remember life before the internet? And if you do, which do you prefer?

Community involvement

What do you do to be involved in the community?

Today’s WordPress question is about being involved in the community. This is a simple one to answer for me – I go to church.

Some people might not consider going to church as being involved in the community. But in a small country town it is. You get to know people of all different ages, backgrounds and nationalities, you get to share lives and you hear of needs in the community.

In a small country town churches are often involved in the community projects. There is always something going on. Our churches have food parcel help, help with free furniture, run youth groups and we have an overnight shelter. These are just some of the things we can help with.

So for me getting involved in my community starts with church. If I moved to a small country town again I would start by visiting the local churches.

Most productive?

When do you feel most productive?

I feel most productive when I am one on one with people. When I can sit and talk, or walk and talk with others, I feel I am in my sweet spot. When I can listen, ask questions and encourage them I feel God can use me to bless them. It is this one on one time that is a big reason that God put me here on earth. Often I go away feeling blessed and like I have used my God given gifts to help others.

God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another. 1 Peter 4:10 NLT

Decisions that have helped me

Describe a decision you made in the past that helped you learn or grow.

Probably the biggest thing that helped me grow in my faith was to attend Bible college.

I first went to Perth Bible College in 1994. I learned a lot and grew in my faith. Then in 2008 I took a year off work to focus on a one year course at Tabor Adelaide. This was done online.

At Tabor I a number of really helpful units including:

  • Introduction to the New Testament
  • Introduction to the Old Testament
  • Introduction to Theology
  • Pastoral Care
  • Christian Leadership
  • Creative Living (understanding who we are in Christ)
  • Public Speaking and Preaching
  • Pastoral Ethics
  • The Ministry of the Holy Spirit
  • Introduction to Biblical Interpretation

Looking back to those studies it gave me a good foundation of who I was in Christ, an overview of the Bible, how to preach and communicate God’s Word, and how to care for others as a Minister.

I have gone on and done more studies to have more tools in my ministry toolbox, but those units gave me most of what I needed to do the things I have done including Pastor, Elder, Chaplain and Lay Preacher.
