Jesus’ power over death

Image: freebibleimages.org

In the Bible we see that Jesus had the power over death. He raised at least three people from the dead and He Himself was raised to life.

  1. Lazarus – in John 11:38-44 we see Jesus raised Lazarus to life. He had been dead and buried for four days, but Jesus brought him back.
  2. Jairus’ daughter – in Matthew 9:18-26 Jesus raised the officials daughter after she died. The man came and asked Jesus to heal her, but she died while he was away. Jesus raised her to life.
  3. Widows only son – in Luke 7:11-15 Jesus came across a funeral procession. He told the young man to get up and he was raised to life. Jesus then gave him back to his mother.

As I read these three stories afresh they gave me a great hope. Hope that nothing is impossible to Jesus in this life. He even has the power over death!

As Christian we know that when we die we will be raised to life to be with Jesus. We will meet Him in heaven first and we will come back with Him when He calls time on this world.

1 Thessalonians 4:15-18 NLT
[15] We tell you this directly from the Lord: We who are still living when the Lord returns will not meet him ahead of those who have died. [16] For the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a commanding shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God. First, the believers who have died will rise from their graves. [17] Then, together with them, we who are still alive and remain on the earth will be caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. Then we will be with the Lord forever. [18] So encourage each other with these words.

Knowing that Jesus has the power over death means that nothing is impossible for Him in this life. Knowing that when this life is over we will spend eternity with Him gives me hope.

Today I want to encourage you with this great hope – nothing is impossible for Jesus. He can raise the dead and He can give us eternal life as we put our hope and trust in Him.

A trustworthy saying

1 Timothy 1:15-16 NLT – This is a trustworthy saying, and everyone should accept it: “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners”-and I am the worst of them all. [16] But God had mercy on me so that Christ Jesus could use me as a prime example of his great patience with even the worst sinners. Then others will realize that they, too, can believe in him and receive eternal life.

In these verses Paul summarises the Good News – Jesus came into the world to save sinners, and no sinner is beyond His saving power.

Jesus didn’t come in to the world to show us how to live better lives or challenge us to be better people. He came to offer us salvation that leads to eternal life.

Jesus tells us in Luke 5:31-32, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor-sick people do. [32] I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners and need to repent.”

Paul understood this and humbly admits that he too was a sinner who also needed to be saved. Paul knew who he was before he met Jesus and he did not shy away from his past. He used it to bring glory to God and people to Christ.

As Christians I think we need to be honest about our past when sharing our faith. There are times when I have shared my past life with people who did not think God would accept them.

The key for us is to realise that none of us are good enough to make it to heaven on our own. We all need Jesus and His death on the cross to pay the price for our sin. Only then are we good enough and ready for eternal life.

It is my hope and prayer that like Paul you have realised your need for Jesus and have found salvation in Him. If you have not found Jesus, I would encourage you to visit my “Find salvation” page here.

Five things to find in this life

I believe there are five things we should try to find in this life. Things which will not only make our lives better, but will make the lives of those around us better too. I think we will also be more fulfilled.

  1. Find Jesus – I honestly believe with all of my heart that we all need to find a personal relationship with Jesus. We all have a God shaped hole inside us and we will not make full sense of this life if we do not include Jesus. As St Augustine said,
“You have made us for yourself, and our hearts are restless, until they can find rest in you”.
  2. Find your Church – We all need a church home where we can learn about God, share our faith with others believers, serve others in community and receive the Sacraments. God wants us in community to journey together and grow in our faith together.
  3. Find your partner – I believe most people will find a partner to share their life with. Yes some are called to serve as Priests or Nuns and serve the church, but most are called to have a spouse and family. Back in the Garden of Eden, God said it is not good for man to live alone. We need someone to love and support us, and we need to be that for someone else.
  4. Find your Vocation – For me a vocation means more than having a job. It is about finding the thing that God has made you to do. We are all shaped by God with different gifts and talents. He knit us together in our mother’s womb to do certain things. I believe we are most satisfied when we find and do God’s work for us.
  5. Find your devotional style – By this I mean finding the way you connect with God. Some love sitting in church and worshipping God, some find reading and meditating on the Bible hits the spot, some go on prayer walks in nature and feel God’s presence, some pray the Rosary and connect with the Mysteries. It is does not matter what it is as long as you feel connected to God and do it regularly. God wants to be with us daily.

These are some of the things that have helped me in this life. I really do not think my life would be the same without them. Each of them has added to my life in so many ways. I am so thankful to God He has blessed me with these things.

God Bless,

Dave

Quote to live by

Do you have a quote you live your life by or think of often?

Galatians 2:20 NLT – My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Galatians 2:20 would be the main quote I try to remember and live by each day. It reminds me of three things.

1. It reminds me that my old self is gone, my new life in Christ is here, and that I need to allow Christ to live and love through me.

2. It reminds me of the hope I have in Christ. He is going to prepare a place for me and He is coming back.

3. It reminds me that Jesus did not hold anything back to save me. He gave His life for me. That is how much He loved me.

The same goes for you too. If you are trusting Jesus for your salvation, then your old life is gone and your new life is here. He can live and love others through you.

Pointing people to Jesus, not a church

Over the years people have asked me what church I attend or what church do I point people to? Generally I do not say, especially online. But if someone asks to come along I will tell them.

My reason for this is that churches in different countries are not the same. If I say I belong to a particular denomination online, it may be very different in Australia to the USA, Asia, Africa or Europe.

My heart is to always point people to Jesus. Jesus is the way we find salvation. Jesus died on the cross for our sin. First and foremost we have to come to Him. Then I encourage people to read the Bible and learn to pray and find a local church.

I came to Jesus through some friends I worked with. They talked about Jesus and the Bible, prayed for me and gave me a tract to find salvation. Then they asked me to their church. I attended for about a year, but as it was a 30 minute drive, I found one closer to my home.

I have found in a smallish country town where I live this works best in my context. People will talk about God, the Bible, prayer and ask questions, but are reluctant to attend church at first. Walking in to a church in a small country town is a big statement. Everybody has a way of finding out.

So I do not really point people to a particular church, I point them to Jesus. I want people to be saved, discipled and to follow Him. Then I point them to the main church denominations in Australia. I encourage them to find a local one.

This is why I include an alphabetical list of denominations on my links page. I want people to find a church where Jesus is held up as Lord and Saviour, the Bible is preached, prayer happens and they can grow in their faith.

Another reason I do not recommend a particular church is one person might like a relaxed house church style and another might like a high church or liturgical style of worship. We are not all the same, we have different tastes, we have to find our own place in the church.

So this is why I do not talk about my church or push a particular denomination. My heart is to point people to Jesus, not a church.
