Brief but powerful letters

I really like this insight from Our Daily Bread today…

The apostle John’s letters (1, 2, and 3 John) are considered brief—particularly in comparison to Paul’s lengthy epistles and other letters, such as Romans and 1 Corinthians. However, even 3 John—the shortest of the biblical letters—would’ve been considered long by ancient standards. Scholar Randy Richards wrote: “The average letter in the first century was 87 words.” Meanwhile 3 John has 219 words in the Greek and is the shortest New Testament letter. First John—at 2,517 words—is still quite brief yet much longer than the typical first-century letter. That common brevity in ancient letters was due to several factors including the cost of hiring a secretary, the cost of papyrus and ink (which had to be handmade), and the difficulty in getting letters to their destinations.

Wait on the Lord

Matthew 5:4 TPT – “What delight comes to you when you wait upon the Lord! For you will find what you long for.”

In our fast paced world we can forget to have time in silence to wait upon the Lord. We all get too busy at times and time alone with God gets squeezed out. But when we take that time our lives are so much better. When we sit alone with God and wait on Him, we find our strength is renewed, the answers we are wanting come and we experience God’s peace and presence in a deeper way. How about you? How is your time alone with God going at the moment?

Prayer

Dear God, please help me to spend time alone with You. I want to sit in Your presence and just be with You. Please give me the desire to do this and help me to slow down to have this time. I thank You that the Bible says that we will find what we long for when we take this time. I ask in Jesus’ name, amen.

A lesson learned later

Share a lesson you wish you had learned earlier in life.

I wish I listened earlier to people who told me about Jesus.

I can remember Christian friends in primary school telling me about Jesus and I did not listen. I also had people talk to me in my teenage years and I made fun of them. Thankfully I listened to some friends in my early twenties!

Like the image above of Jesus calming the storm on the lake, He could have calmed some of the storms in my life. Some may have even been prevented if I followed Him.

Don’t leave it too long, trust Jesus today. Turn to Him and follow Him. Like my friend said to me in my early twenties, “If you are not walking with Jesus, you are missing out on how good life can be”.
