What’s a fear you’ve overcome — and how did you do it?
My greatest fear that I have overcome is the fear of public speaking. I guess this is similar to most people.
I can remember being in primary school and being terrified of reading aloud in class. On days I had to do a talk I would take the day off school.
As an adult I would do everything I could to avoid public speaking. Even small things like doing a brief introduction of who you are in a training course terrified me.
I can remember in the early 1990s a friend asked me to be best man at his wedding. Rather than seeing it as an honour, my first thought was I will have to make a speech!
So how did I overcome this? Here are a few things helped me.
I prepared early and wrote everything I had to say out word for word.
I practiced even the smallest talk or reading about 100 times. Not exaggerating!
I prayed a lot. My biggest prayer was, “Please be with me Lord and please help me Lord”.
I wrote out scriptures and put them in my pocket. At every chance I would read them.
I got books from the library to help. These days you can look online for help on making speeches.
I asked for tips from people who were good public speakers. I spoke to Pastors and teachers.
I realised that public speaking is a great way to reach and encourage people towards God.
I looked for opportunities to speak publicly and overcome my fear. This was very very scary!
This process probably took about ten years to feel comfortable with speaking in front of others. It was a long hard road for me, but it was worth it.
So what were the main verses I kept in my pocket?
Philippians 4:13 NLT – For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.
Ephesians 2:10 NLT – For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.
I am not sure if this is actually qualifies as a meme, but it is one of my favourite cartoons. Sadly as I am in my late 50s I relate to it a bit too much 😀
I pray that you…may…know this love that surpasses knowledge.” Ephesians 3:17-19 NIV
In the realm of general relativity, an event horizon is the point of no return. It’s the point at which gravitational pull becomes so great that it’s impossible to escape. The most obvious example is the black hole—a celestial object so massive that light can only enter but never exit its gravitational field.
The escape velocity of a black hole is greater than the speed of light, which is impossible to exceed. So, once you cross its horizon, there is no turning back. God’s love is like that. The Bible says, “God is love.” The implications of that one statement will take all of eternity to unpack. Nothing pulls stronger or longer than God’s love. Love is an event horizon, and once you cross over, you can’t get back. And who would want to? Logic won’t get you to God’s love. His love is beyond logical—it’s theological. The only way to receive the love of God is via revelation. Paul wrote: “I pray that you…may…grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ…that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.” The love of God is measureless. It doesn’t fit in a box, not even a box the size of the universe. And if the universe isn’t big enough, God’s love certainly won’t fit within the confines of our human logic. So how do we get it in our hearts and minds? Through a personal revelation! So, the word for you today is: pray for a revelation of God’s love.
I just completed another YouVersion plan called, “Freedom for sin”. It has some practical reminders about the sin in our lives and how Christ has forgiven and covered them all.
